Quick answer: A sodium-ion battery can be considered for cold-weather service only after its energy delivery, pulse voltage and charging behavior have been checked at the intended cell temperature. A successful discharge at -40°C does not establish a charging specification at -40°C.
For a remote backup system, the difficult moment may be the first recharge after a winter outage. For a vehicle, it may be a high-current start before the battery has warmed. These are different demands. A useful supplier discussion begins with the duty cycle, then asks which test demonstrates each part of it.
Page 13 identifies a 160BL-12.5Ah example and plots discharge behavior at several temperatures, including -40°C. The colder traces run at a lower voltage. That matters because equipment can reach its low-voltage limit before all nominal capacity has been delivered. The chart alone does not give a complete application rating: the full test protocol, discharge current, soak duration and sample variation are still required.
Page 15 is a separate charging chart labelled -20°C and constant current of 20A. The presentation does not establish that it uses the same cell as page 13. Combining the two charts into one guaranteed operating envelope would therefore be premature. Keeping them separate makes the engineering discussion more useful.
| Requirement | What to record | Why it affects the purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Energy delivery | Watt-hours and ampere-hours to the equipment cutoff, at the required temperature and load. | Available runtime may be limited by voltage before nominal Ah is exhausted. |
| Short power demand | Minimum loaded voltage, pulse current, duration and repeat interval. | A high current number has little value if the controller drops out. |
| Recharge | Manufacturer-approved current and voltage limits at measured cell temperature. | Cold-discharge capability does not define cold-charge capability. |
| Condition after testing | Recovered capacity, DC resistance and inspection results. | One successful cold event does not establish long-term durability. |
A practical comparison should use the same equipment cutoff, load profile, cold-soak condition and energy accounting. Comparing one battery at a gentle current with another during a large pulse does not answer the buyer’s question. Separate room-temperature recovery from performance while the cell is still cold. Ask for both cell-level evidence and a pack demonstration with the proposed BMS and connections.
The low-temperature literature describes limitations involving ion transport, interfaces and polarization. It supports examining the complete design rather than assuming that every sodium-ion formulation behaves alike. This is useful context for qualification, not an independent validation of our reference charts.
For a telecom or UPS proposal, define the required DC range, peak demand and backup duration. For a vehicle, include starting and regenerative-charge conditions. Ask the supplier to return a proposed operating envelope, a test plan and the exceptions that require heating, reduced current or a different configuration. This gives purchasing and engineering a shared acceptance basis before samples are ordered.
No. It is a cell-level example. The exact model, test method and completed pack behavior must be confirmed.
No. Obtain the approved charging limits and supporting test evidence for the exact cell and pack.
Delivered watt-hours to the system cutoff at the intended temperature and load, together with peak-power capability.
